Korea's Network Quality
Korea consistently ranks among the top countries globally for mobile internet speed and coverage. 5G is widely available in cities; 4G LTE covers even remote hiking trails in national parks. You won't struggle to find signal in any populated area.
Option 1: Tourist SIM Card (Best for Most Visitors)
A prepaid data SIM is the most practical option for travelers staying 5–30 days. Available at Incheon Airport arrival hall (GS25, CU stores, and dedicated SIM counters), Gimpo Airport, and most convenience stores in the city.
What to expect:
— 5–10 day data SIM: ₩15,000–25,000
— 30-day unlimited data: ₩45,000–70,000
— Main carriers: KT, SKT, LG U+
— Kakao and KT SIMs at the airport are the most tourist-friendly (English setup)
Note: most tourist SIMs are data-only — no Korean phone number for calls. For calls, add ₩10,000–20,000 for a voice package.
Option 2: eSIM (Most Convenient)
If your phone supports eSIM (most phones from 2020 onward), a Korea eSIM is the easiest option — activate before you arrive, no physical card to collect.
Recommended providers: Airalo (budget), Holafly (unlimited data, slightly pricier), KT eSIM (most reliable carrier). Prices start at around $8 USD for 1GB/7 days.
Option 3: Pocket WiFi Rental
A portable WiFi router that connects multiple devices. Good for families or groups sharing one plan. Available at airports (₩8,000–12,000/day). Requires charging daily and carrying an extra device — less convenient than a SIM for solo travelers.
Free WiFi in Korea
Free WiFi is widely available at: — All subway stations and trains (look for "Korea WiFi Zone" or "T wifi zone") — Coffee shops (no password needed at most chains — Paris Baguette, Ediya, Starbucks) — Convenience stores (GS25, CU, 7-Eleven — connect to store WiFi) — Tourist information centers — Major attractions
Quality varies; subway WiFi is slow but functional. Coffee shop WiFi is generally excellent.
Useful Apps to Download Before You Arrive
Naver Maps — More accurate than Google Maps for Korea. Walking, transit, and driving directions. Use it over Google Maps without exception.
Kakao T — Taxi booking app. Easier than hailing in the street, shows price upfront.
Papago — Naver's translation app. Camera translation works well for menus and signs.
Korea Subway (SMRT or Kakao Metro) — Subway navigation with real-time arrivals.
Coupang Eats or Baemin — Food delivery, if staying in an apartment or guesthouse.
